Tune of the Week
When I was a student at Carnegie Mellon University, I remember one of the studio classes was focused on knowing the Great American Songbook. My teacher, Peter Sullivan, proceeded to play many of those songs in the class (many of which we, the students, reluctantly didn’t know). The point? As musicians, we should be able to play any song tune on our instrument.
I am not for sure where the idea originated, but I first came across this ‘Tune a Week’ concept from Dr. Bruce Faske at Arkansas State University. I have now written my own “Tune of the Week” versions and give them to my students at both Kenyon College and Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
The student is to play one tune each week in a different key. I am flexible with some students depending on their ability. I have the student bring their sheet to the lesson so we can mark off the songs that are completed.
