Julie Landsman Joins University of Southern California Music Faculty
On July 14, 2020, the University of Southern California (USC) Thornton School of Music announced that Julie Landsman will be joining their faculty beginning in the fall of 2020. As Landsman has held a long, three-decade tenure at The Juilliard School in New York, she will continue teaching at both Thornton and Juilliard for the next two years.
A pioneer for the modern orchestral horn, Landsman first became notable for winning the Principal Horn position with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra through a blind audition at the age of 30. From 1985-2010, she would perform on the opera company’s most memorable recordings and performances. In addition to world-class performance, Landsman is also considered one of the foremost authorities on the Carmine Caruso teaching method. Through her diligence and joy in teaching, many of Landsman’s students are now members of well-known ensembles including the Metropolitan Opera, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the San Francisco Opera.
Landsman will continue the longstanding tradition of horn instruction at Thornton as Kristy Morrell, the school’s most recent horn professor, became the Associate Professor of Horn at Baylor University.
