Gene Pokorny to Premiere Schifrin Tuba Concerto
In a September 2016 interview, the composer Lalo Schifrin gave mention to working on a tuba concerto for Gene Pokorny, Principal Tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. After some digging, it has been confirmed that Pokorny will be giving the world premiere of Schifrin’s Tuba Concerto with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra in March of 2018. Redlands, California is quite familiar with Pokorny as his well-known Low Brass Seminar occurs every summer at the University of Redlands. Schifrin, an Argentinian composer/arranger, is best known for composing the music to Mission: Impossible and the Dirty Harry.
Other works on this “One Night Only” concert include:
George Frideric Handel – Concerto Grosso in D major, op. 6 no. 5 HWV 323
Franz Joseph Haydn – Symphony No. 104 in D major, H. 1/104
Ottorino Respighi – Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite 1, P. 109
Lalo Schifrin – Mission: Impossible Theme
The performance will occur on March 3, 2018 at the Memorial Chapel in Redlands, California.
