Shannon Gunn’s Saffron Ensemble—including strings, synth, rhythm section, and trombone—premiered at the 2022 Jazz and Freedom Festival in Washington, D.C. and has played in different configurations since then. The ensemble performs Shannon Gunn’s originals and arrangements, combining traditional and free jazz in a synth-infused setting that incorporates improvisation throughout all its instruments, including strings. The goal is to cross collaborate between the traditional jazz combo and a string trio while performing new works that bring light to a social justice issue.
