Living jazz legend Wynton Marsalis channeled the saxophone pyrotechnics of Charlie “Bird” Parker into astonishing feats of virtuosity for classical tuba, played by the BSO’s own Principal Tuba Aubrey Foard. An instant hit following its 1903 debut, Nielsen’s richly evocative Helios Overture depicts the sun rising and setting over the Aegean Sea.
