Detroit Symphony Bass Trombonist Retires After 35 Years Of Service

In August 2020, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) announced that Randall Hawes, one of the great bass trombonists of our time, has retired from their orchestra. Raised in Battle Creek, Michigan, Hawes joined the DSO in August 1985 on a one-year contract which he then won as a permanent position in March 1986. A graduate of Central Michigan University, Hawes continued his studies at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining the DSO, Hawes performed with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, the American Wind Symphony, the New York Harlem Opera Ensemble, and a two-year stint with the Woody Herman Orchestra.

During his time in Detroit, Hawes recorded and performed with many of the great conductors including Leonard Slatkin, Neeme Järvi, and Günther Herbig. With his big, warm sound, he has released two solo albums and recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Among many others, Hawes has also performed with the World Orchestra for Peace, the Musicians du Monde Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra.

Even though Hawes is retiring from the DSO, he will continue his teaching positions at both Northwestern University and the Cleveland Institute of Music as well as playing the year as guest bass trombonist with the Cleveland Orchestra. According to the Detroit Symphony website, Ilan Morgenstern will be serving as Acting Bass Trombonist for the year.
