Tuesdays on the Tube: Stefan Schulz

This evening, I would like to highlight Stefan Schulz, the bass trombonist of the Berlin Philharmonic. Born in Berlin, Schulz studied bass trombone in Berlin and Chicago, and became the Berlin Philharmonic’s bass trombone in 2002. In addition to performing with the orchestra and many chamber groups, Schulz is also a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts.

I first heard Prof Schulz’s playing when I listened to his solo album, The Berlin Recital. Immediately, I was drawn to his playing not only because of his style and range but also his command of the instrument. This great album includes standard bass (and tenor) repertoire as well as modern compositions. Since then, Schulz has recorded other solo albums and has done many collaborative projects with the composer, Daniel Schnyder.
